The Chew: Curtis Stone's Grilled Tri-Tip Steak with Green Bean and Red Onion

Curtis Stone, author ofWhat's For Dinner? entered the kitchen with Daphne Oz to help her made a dish both veggie and meat lovers could enjoy with his Grilled Tri-Tip Steak Recipe With Green Beans And Red Onion.

Curtis prided the dish on being very simple, but also featuring one of the most flavorful parts of the sirloin—the tri-tip. If you can't get your hands on a tri-tip, you can replace it with just about any steak you want—from the sirloin to the New York Strip. The tri-tip is a cut you go to the butcher to ask for it.

The great flavors of the tri tip are made even better from the charred flavor it gets from cooking on the grill. Check it out!

  1. While your grill is heating up, remove the tri-tip from refrigeration and allow it to sit at room temperature.
  2. Prepare your grill for direct-heat cooking by setting it to medium-high.
  3. Whisk the shallots, red pepper flakes, garlic, and vinegar together in a medium bowl.
  4. While whisking, gradually add your 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  5. Add salt and pepper to the vinaigrette for seasoning. Season to taste and then, set aside.
  6. Season the tri-tip with salt and pepper, then coat it with your remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  7. Grill the tri-tip for 12 minutes or until a thermometer reads 120F (medium-rare) when inserted into the thickest part of the meat. Whichever method you choose, turn the steak halfway through your cooking process.
  8. To allow it to cook faster, open the steak up a little with small cuts.
  9. Take the tri-tip off the heat and place it on a cutting board to let it stand.
  10. Before grilling the onions and green beans, coat them with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  11. Now, place the green beans and onions on the grill, where you will cook them for two minutes, or until they are lightly-charred.
  12. Transfer to the bowl with the vinaigrette and toss to coat.
  13. After you are done grilling, move the green beans and onions to the vinaigrette bowl and toss them. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  14. Dish four servings of the onion and green bean mixture onto four plates. Then, crumble goat cheese onto the vegetables.
  15. Slice the tri-tip into thin strips, cutting across the grain.
  16. Dish the tri-tip onto your four dinner plates, add a little carving juice to each, and serve.

The Chew: Curtis Stone Easy-To-Grow Vegetables

Many want fresh vegetables, but just do not have the green thumb to make it happen. However, Curtis Stone showed us two easy-to-grow vegetables that just about anyone can grow. Curtis, who has been a lazy gardener in the past, said that mint grows pretty much on his own, and can let go for several months. However, you should plant it in a pot to contain the growth. Then there was arugula, which is a very resilient flower.

Daniel Hill, here. After graduating from Duquesne University in 2012 with a journalism degree, I stumbled around in the dark for a bit before finding a home at Recapo in Cincinnati. I enjoy going to the gym, writing (duh), reading, music, and a LOT of video games. Get at me, fellow nerds.
